Securing Your Home Against Intruders During an Emergency

There is an interesting post on The Home For Survival blog about securing your home.
While you may have your bug-out bag ready and a bug-out location all stocked, what if you end up having to hunker down at your home.  How prepared is your home to offer security and safety for you and your family? If a disaster of some kind occurs that most people are not prepared for, a large portion of the population tends to lean towards looting.
Here are some things to consider when securing your home against intruders.

  1. Don't Rely on Security Services When Securing Your Home.  In the event of a major catastrophe, the likely hood that these type of services are going to be functioning is not good.  Also in a major catastrophe, there is a good chance that the power grid may be down, therefore rendering your Security Service useless.
  2. Develop Skills in Firearms. Make sure you and your family know how to safely use your firearms.  Most often you won't even have to fire it.  Showing it to would be attackers might be enough.  One of the most intimidating sounds in the world is the slide of a pump-action shotgun locking a shell into place.
  3. Canine Comfort.  Dogs are always a good addition to keeping your home safe.  They can provide a warning of intruders and also help defend the home from those who would try to get in.
  4. Hidden Weaponry.  Having weapons to defend yourself available within reach in every room of the house can help keep you alive. In the event of a home intrusion, you don't always have the luxury of being able to get to your weapon in another part of the house.
  5. Confidence.  One of your greatest assets during a home invasion situation is your own confidence that you will be able to handle the situation.  You need to remain focused.  Decide what you are willing to do to protect your family.  Never underestimate and opponent who has nothing else to lose and/or is starving.  There can be no room for hesitation.
Securing your home is job that is never completely done, but you need to work towards making it as secure as possible for the safety of you and your family.  For more information, visit The Home For Survival blog for the original post.
