Over on Prep-blog.com there is an interesting post about survival gardens. Some interesting points are brought up, the key point being, don't wait to start your garden until you need it. Gardening takes practice. Start a garden now so that you can learn the skills needed to be able to grow your own food. Gardening is not as easy as it looks. The following is a list of things you may need to get worked out.
- Spot: Where will you put your garden
- Sun/Shade: Are there parts of your garden spot that get more or less sun/shade? What grows better in those spots?
- Soil: In most good productive gardens, the gardener has been working and improving the soil for years.
- Water: How and where are you going to get your water and how are you going to get the water to the plants. Keeping a garden watered is one of the biggest challenges.
- What to Plant: Learning what to plant takes time. Yes, you can look up what grows well in your area, but depending on your soil, gardening skills, amount of sun and shade in you garden spot, etc., you might not be successful at growing everything listed for your area.
- Pests: Learning how to deal with pests takes time. From insects, to squirrels, to mice, to birds, to hungry neighbors.
