You Need a Pellet Air Rifle

Yup, that’s right, a pellet gun. You, know, just a step up from a BB gun. If you’ve never considered a pellet gun as a survival rifle option, I hope I might just change your mind.

A pellet gun is an excellent gun to take down small game. Hunting small game is perfect for any survival situation. Rabbit, squirrel, dove, quail, duck and the like are excellent food sources and are readily available in most of the country. With a little practice you can become very proficient at hunting small game with a pellet gun. Because you will probably be limited to one shot, it may require a better stalking skills and better shooting skills than say if you were using your 10/22 or a shotgun. But those are both skills that you should be refined for a survival situation anyway. Hunting with a pellet gun will force you to be a BETTER hunter and it will also put dinner on the table.

Pellets are very cheap ammo
Another reason a pellet gun is a great survival rifle option is the ammo. Pellets compared to other ammo is VERY cheap. You can buy hundreds of pellets for just a few bucks. Spend $50 and you’ve got enough to last a lifetime of small game hunting. If things get crazy and society ends up in a survival situation, traditional ammunition may become increasingly difficult to get a hold of. And, if you can find it, it will be ridiculously expensive. If the world we live in ever gets this way, why waste your traditional ammo on hunting squirrel or other small game? That would be wasteful and careless if there was a smarter way. There is – pellets! Not only are pellets super cheap, they are very small. You can carry thousands and not even know they are there. You can store tens of thousands in a shoe box. To top it off, pellets have a shelf life of pretty much forever!

Break-Barrel Air Rifle
Another reason that pellet guns make great survival rifles is that they are quite. In many survival scenarios, a silent weapon is a good thing. Not only can you hunt without drawing attention to yourself or your family, but shooting a silent weapon often means you can get off more than 1 shot if there are multiple targets. Both of these are positive.

Multi-Pump Air Rifle
Another great thing about pellet guns is that they work on air. You don’t have to buy air. And, it’s never going to be out of stock. For this reason, a multi-pump or break-
barrel pellet gun is the way to go. Try to avoid the CO2 powered air guns. Needing to refill CO2 canisters or tanks doesn’t make any sense in a survival situation. You want to keep it as old fashioned as possible.

There are tons of options when it comes to Hand Pump or Break Barrel guns. They both come in .177 and .22 calibers. The fps varies depending on the gun. I have a Ruger Air Hawk that shoots pellets at around 1000 fps.

So what do you think? Are you convinced that a pellet gun should be part of your survival gun arsenal?
