Cooking Beans More Efficiently With Less Fuel

In a survival situation, fuel for cooking should be conserved as much as possible so that it will last as long as possible. While beans are a nice food for storage, and to eat as they supply much needed nutrients, they take a long time to cook and can use up fuel stores.

Here is a more efficient way to cook beans that will save on fuel consumption. Cook your beans in a pressure cooker. Put in the beans, the right amount of water, and any other ingredients you desire, then place the lid on the pressure cooker. Start to heat it up until it comes up to pressure. That is all the heat you will need. Now you can take the pressure cooker off the heat, insulate it and leave it for two and a half hours or so and the beans will be cooked.

The best way to insulate it would be to fill a large box with blankets, newspapers, or other insulating materials and then put the pressure cooker in the box. If you can’t find a box, just wrap it in blankets. In a survival situation this should cut down your fuel consumption while still allowing you to eat all those beans that you’ve stored!
